2010 Talent Contest

Final Results

Out of the eight groups who made it through the preliminary selection process, the judges, with great difficulty, selected two winning groups who will play on Main Stage on Saturday afternoon.

The official rules for the Talent Contest are posted below. Here's a summary:

Who can enter?

The talent contest is open to musicians and dancers. There are two categories:

  1. Individuals or duets
  2. Groups of three or more performers

Contestants should be established acts who are accustomed to performing a full set and can be prepared to entertain at Main Stage on Saturday afternoon for 45 minutes.

What will you win?

Winners in both categories will get a 45-minute Main Stage slot on Saturday. In addition, winners will receive an honorarium. Category 1 (individuals and duets): $75. Category 2 (groups of 3 or more): $150.

How do you enter?

The deadline for entries is May 10, 2010.

Entries must include:

  1. AFF10 Talent Contest Form
  2. Demo CDs, tapes, DVDs, etc.
  3. The entry fee ($20 for individuals/duets), $25 for groups of 3 or more)

What then?

Since there are only 12 slots on Friday night, contestants will be preselected by an independent panel. You'll be notified if you were selected to compete on Main Stage on Friday night.

On Friday night, each act has 6 minutes to perform (you'll lose points if you go over).

Rules and Requirements

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY MAY 10, 2010

This year, the Albuquerque Folk Festival (AFF) will be presenting our second talent contest to take place on the first night of the festival, Friday June 18th, 2010. The contest, which will be for musicians and dancers, will be open to local groups in two categories:

  1. Groups of 1 or 2 performers
  2. Groups of 3 or more performers

The winners of each of the two categories will play on the Main Stage of the Albuquerque Folk Festival (AFF) the following day, Saturday June 19th, 2010. There will be a fee for entering the contest. The fee is non-refundable. The winners, in addition to the opportunity to play a Main Stage performance, will be paid an honorarium.

  1. Groups of 1 or 2 performers – Fee for entering the contest – $20. Winning group receives $75
  2. Groups of 3 or more performers – Fee for entering the contest – $25. Winning group receives $150

The talent contest will be judged by 3 independent judges* who will select the winner in each of the two categories.

RULES OF THE CONTEST

Note:

  1. Contestants will have scheduled performance times and the AFF will work around schedules of volunteers/presenters/jam hosts at the festival if they are contestants as well.
  2. Contestants must be able to perform on main stage. The stage is not solid. It is made of risers and may limit certain activities. If there is some question, check with Gary or Ben before applying

Rules (all rules will be strictly enforced):

  1. All Friday contestants will play a maximum of 6 minutes total.
  2. The winner of each category will perform 45 minutes on Saturday.
  3. There will be a maximum of 12 groups in the contest on Friday (either 6 of each category or a combination of 12 from the two categories).
  4. Contestants should be established groups who are accustomed to performing a full set and can be prepared to entertain at main stage Saturday for 45 minutes.
  5. Contestants will be preselected by an independent panel from the list of entries. Contestant preselection will be determined by the independent panel and will be based on a review of entries submitted. Criteria for selection will include performance quality and other criteria, including having a balanced and varied set of performances.
  6. All entries must submit information utilizing AFF10 Talent Contest Forms (see link), and must provide examples of their work. The examples could include up to three songs/dances on CD's, DVD's, tapes, videos, etc. The material must be submitted with the entrance form and the fee check, and must be received no later than May 10, 2010.
  7. All routines, music, choreography, and costumes must be suitable for family viewing.
  8. AFF talent contest officials reserve the right to deduct points, disallow or disqualify any act for any reason, including acts considered distasteful or vulgar.
  9. The decisions of the judges are final and represent their personal opinions, not necessarily that of the AFF.
  10. Participation in the talent contest indicates approval to use any photo or video image taken during the event in future literature.
  11. A sound system will be provided. Any electrical instruments (bass and/or keyboard only) will be required to use the PA system provided as an amplifier. Individual amps will not be permitted. Drum kits are not permitted**.
  12. No piano will be provided.
  13. Only live music will be acceptable. (For dance groups, live music is preferred but not required.)
  14. Judges' criteria. Judges' scoring will be based on the following:
    • Material selection and appropriateness – maximum 25 points
    • Execution of performance – maximum 25 points
    • Showmanship and stage presence – maximum 25 points
    • Rhythm arrangement and difficulty – maximum 25 points
    • Total points possible – maximum 100 points
  15. Points will be deducted if groups go over the 6 minute presentation time.
  16. How to enter the talent contest
    • Fill out entry forms which can be found on the Albuquerque Folk Festival Website at www.abqfolkfest.org.
    • Send completed form, fee check made payable to the Albuquerque Folk Festival, and accompanying materials to:

  17. Final listing of talent show participants will be available online during the week of May 23rd. In addition, the contest managers will notify the participants of final decisions during that week.
  18. Contestants cannot have won in the previous year's contest.

* AFF will attempt to find judges entirely outside of the AFF organization.

**Other more "traditional" types of percussion may be permitted
